What began as a solitary practice soon revealed itself as a vital language, one that now shapes the core of his daily life. Autodidacte, Gasper approaches painting not through academic codes, but through instinct and interior necessity. His process is guided more by sound, movement, and feeling than by predetermined ideas. Each canvas becomes a response to a sensation, a memory, a vibration caught in time. Brushstrokes move freely, colours collide or flow, and forms emerge organically in compositions that are at once spontaneous and deliberate.
Gasper grew up immersed in diverse cultures, with a family that valued exploration and exposure to the world. This early openness left a lasting imprint: curiosity is the undercurrent of his practice. It can be felt in the boldness of his visual choices, in the layering of references, and in the subtle presence of music and motion within his pieces.
His work often evokes echoes of contemporary visual archetypes, yet always reinterpreted through his own raw and expressive filter. Each painting holds the trace of an encounter with himself, with the world, with something just beneath the surface.
While entirely self-taught, Gasper’s visual language resonates with the gestural power of de Kooning, the lyrical abstraction of Helen Frankenthaler, the emotional immediacy of Brice Marden, and the bold rawness of Basquiat. These references are not citations, but undercurrents present in the movement, the urgency, the freedom of his lines.
Bruno Gasper’s art doesn’t seek to explain. It invites the viewer to feel first and perhaps, only later, to understand.
